There are a lot of things to do if you are visiting Fort Myers. Here are ten top things to do.
Plan a visit to the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates. They are close together, and feature a 21-acre botanical garden and a museum. This is educational for children but should interest the whole family.
The IMAG is a hands-on museum and aquarium that features dozens of interactive exhibits, animal encounters and a hurricane simulator. The Railroad Museum of South Florida, in Lakes Regional Park has a one-mile miniature train ride as well as a museum. The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium offers nature trails, a museum and of course the Planetarium. All three emphasize science and technology.
The Alliance for the Arts offers exhibits, and a large number of performances including drama and comedy. Consult their web site for what is being offered when you will visit.
There are a variety of short cruises available, including dolphin cruises, and a sunset cruise of scenic Estero Bay. There is also a cruise that explores the Everglades. The Military Museum of South Florida and Library is worth a visit, although the library is for research only.
Fort Myers has several family attractions such as Zoomer’s Amusement Park, which is small but family friendly. There are a number of opportunities for kayaking or standup paddle boarding. For example, Kayak Excursions offers kayak rentals, kayak fishing and kayak tours. There are also a number of venues for scuba diving and snorkeling.
Finally, the nearby Ding Darling Nature Preserve (named for a famous naturalist and cartoonist), is one of the premier birding spots in the Southeast. This is an excellent opportunity for nature enthusiasts.
