What To Do When You Have Peeling Paint?
Paint that is peeling from walls, ceilings, or other areas of your home, can be very troublesome for homeowners. Not only is peeling paint unsightly and distracting to look at, but it may leave you with questions about what caused the paint to peel and how to fix the problem. Signs of peeling paint includes strips or pieces of paint that has pulled away from the surface of the wall, but it may also include signs, such as; holes in the painted layer or spidery-like cracks and lines that are visible to the naked eye. If you are a homeowner who is faced with uneven, or unattractive paint problems such as these, then continue reading for some advice on how to correct the problematic issue.
The first thing that needs to be done, is to remove the loose or cracking paint. You may do this with a paint scraper or with a wire brush. Prior to removing the paint, however, ensure that all safety measures are in place first. Protect yourself from paint particles that may be harmful to you or may be messy for your surroundings. Place drop cloths along the floor, tape off nearby trim areas, and supply yourself with a mask, eye goggles, and gloves.
After the questionable paint is removed, then perform any repairs that are necessary. You may need to use a patching compound that is applied to the surface with a putty knife, in order to fill in any holes or damage that has occurred along the surface. Once the area is dry, you should use fine-grit sandpaper on the repaired area, in order to create a smooth, flat finish. Ensure that the area is clean by wiping it with a damp sponge and removing any leftover sanding residue.
Next, you may wish to use a primer along the surface, especially if you think moisture was the cause of the original problem. Primer will help to prevent further paint peeling problems, and will also help the new paint to adhere evenly to the repaired surface.
Lastly, paint the surface that you have, so diligently, repaired. One coat of paint may be sufficient, but no worries if it takes two coats, in order to provide a desirable affect for you to enjoy.
